The Epicurious Wanderers!

Simbambili – day 1 part 2

The adventure continues!
After lunch we headed out for the afternoon game drive, what will we find this afternoon…..

There had been reports of a large male leopard north of the camp so we set out in search of him. Mumps our tracker was in his precarious seat on the front of the land rover, no seat belt or anything yet he looks as steady as they come. Our search instead tracked down a herd of zebra, led by a large male, very majestic creatures they are to watch. More solid than a normal horse, much thicker necks. We watched them for a while and then moved on. By now sightings of impala and warthogs are common place and don’t get the same ooh moment, but still great to see.

We returned to looking for the large male leopard, he had again been sighted by another group. His trail though went cold and we set out to look for a female that had been spotted. We tracked her to a very thick bush patch and began circling on the rough tracks to see if we could spot her. After a while Liam, our guide, turned into the scrub and we did a little off-roading, very tough this time. Again we couldn’t spot her but sat and waited for awhile. Then the radio chat started again, we don’t hear anything as Liam has an earpiece but we see him on the radio and he is talking to our tracker. And we’re off again and speed over the rough roads, obviously something has been sighted by another group.

There has been a confirmed leopard sighting and we are heading there. When we arrive it’s amazing, it’s the atypical leopard sighting, he’s up a tree just like you see in the movies. How I wish the damn card reader would work, the photos are just amazing.. He’s only metres from us. After a few minutes he got restless and climbed down from the tree, he walked so close to our land rover you could have reached over the side and touched him. We followed him along the road, he didn’t seem on the least worries about our presence, in fact he kept looking back to see if we were following. There are four vehicles trailing him, we take turns in being at the head of the line. This is just amazing, he is such a majestic creature. Wow
